How to set up iPhone Content Restrictions for kids/teens

Uncategorized Jul 09, 2020

I recently received multiple requests from moms with boys on how to set up iPhone restrictions.

1. Go to the Settings Gear on your iPhone (black gear icon)

2. Choose Screen Time

3. Choose Content & Privacy Restrictions

4. Choose your level of restrictions.

Here are mine.

Click WEB CONTENT section to go even deeper.

5. Define what level of protection you want.

If you decide to choose "Allowed Websites Only", you will need to type in the specific websites you want to allow. If he/she tries to access another website, it will show a screen to "allow website" and you will need to enter your screentime passcode to allow it. This will NOT automatically add this website to the "Allowed Websites Only" list. It will be for only that occasion. So, if it is a school link or something they will need to see frequently, be sure to copy the URL (from the internet address bar) and add it to their allowed list.

SETTING UP DOWNTIME

1. Go back to the Settings Gear and click it to open the menu page.

2. Set your preferred downtime

3. Setting up Apps to be "Always Allowed"

Go to the settings main screen and choose the green icon “Always Allowed” to turn off what you do NOT want to work in downtime.

You will notice two lists -

one on top; these apps will always be available to work, and

one on the bottom; these apps will stop working (without entering in the screentime passcode) during downtime

(however, they give the option to use 1 minute without a passcode).

SETTING UP FAMILY SHARING

Notice on my screenshot I have my two children's iPhone accounts (blacked out at the bottom) set up to be monitored (they do not appreciate this - but I find it very helpful).

When you click their individual >, it opens up the same settings menu page that you are looking at for my phone, and you will have access to set up their downtime, apps allowed, content restrictions, etc... all the same way as above.

We each have our own Apple ID. (I am not sure at the  moment if that is required - but in case you need to know that to help troubleshoot getting this set up.) ;)

This allows you to see the information (stats and settings) on your child's iPhone. They can request access to things from their phone and you will receive a notification and can allow them access remotely. I love this feature for when they are traveling and I forgot to turn off their access to call or text me at night. I can turn it back on and make sure their phone will ring when I call them.

Here is how to set this up - Straight from Apple's website.

SETTING UP THE SCREEN PASSCODE

Notice at the bottom of the Settings Menu - you will see the BLUE SETTING UP PASSCODE words. Click that and set up your passcode.

BE SURE TO WRITE IT DOWN and know where you have stored it.

That should do it.

These are just physical safeguards; you will get to do the hard work of teaching the deeper protections of guarding their hearts, minds, eyes, and ears.

God Blessing be upon you and your family.

May all your precious children be protected from evil and only find the good.

Happy to Help!

Rachelle ;)
